Alkimos Interchange Upgrades Follow Second Fatal Wrong-Way Crash This Year

Following a second deadly wrong-way collision this year, safety upgrades are underway at the Romeo Road and Mitchell Freeway interchange in Alkimos. An internal investigation found that the site already meets relevant safety standards, but the government is responding to community concerns.

Safety upgrades are being implemented at the Romeo Road and Mitchell Freeway interchange in Alkimos, Western Australia, after a second fatal wrong-way crash in the area within months. The most recent investigation was initiated after a head-on collision near Lukin Drive in Butler in February. That crash killed two people and injured two others when a white Isuzu utility vehicle, driven by a 24-year-old man, struck a Toyota Yaris driven by a 56-year-old woman. Both drivers died as a result of the collision. According to Main Roads, an internal investigation determined that the interchange already meets all relevant Australian safety standards and guidelines. Despite this finding, the state government has announced further safety upgrades in response to community concerns.
