Bowden Institution Inmate Dies While in Custody; Police Notified

Albert Bellegarde, a 47-year-old inmate at Bowden Institution, died while in custody on March 20, 2026. Bellegarde had been serving a life sentence since January 22, 2009.

Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) Prairie Region reported that Albert Bellegarde, an inmate at Bowden Institution, died while in custody on March 20, 2026. Bowden Institution is located in Innisfail, Alberta. At the time of his death, Bellegarde was 47 years old. He had been serving a life sentence since January 22, 2009. Bellegarde's next of kin have been notified of his death. As is standard procedure when an inmate dies, the Correctional Service of Canada will review the circumstances of Bellegarde's death. CSC policy mandates that both the police and the coroner be notified.
