Fraser Valley Residents Hopeful as Flood Risk Persists After Heavy Rains

Following days of heavy rainfall, some areas of British Columbia's southern coast saw sunshine on Friday, but flood and landslide risks remain, especially in the Fraser Valley. A local state of emergency is in effect for the Chilliwack area of the Fraser Valley, where dozens of homes are under evacuation alert due to the potential harms to people, property, infrastructure and the environment.

Environment Canada issued warnings on Friday, stating that heavy rain combined with melting mountain snow could cause flooding in area river systems. In the Fraser Valley, a local state of emergency has been declared for the Chilliwack area. Just under 40 homes are under evacuation alert, and residents should be ready to leave at a moment's notice. According to the Fraser Valley Regional District, the prolonged rainfall has raised potential harms to people, property, infrastructure and the environment. District director Patti MacAhonic said that efforts to shore up the rise of the Chilliwack River are starting to pay off. MacAhonic added that the river is supposed to peak around 1 a.m. on Saturday, and if projections hold true, the area will be able to "ride this one out."
