Manhattan Townhouse Where Mark Rothko Lived Listed for $6.2 Million

A historic Manhattan townhouse where Mark Rothko once lived has been renovated into a two-unit condominium. The triplex penthouse of the building, known as the Rothko House, is for sale for $6.2 million.

A Greek Revival townhouse in Manhattan's East Village, where abstract expressionist Mark Rothko lived in the 1930s, has been transformed. Rothko, known for his colour field technique, created his painting "Thru the Window" while living there, inscribing the building's address on the back. In the 1970s, filmmaker Emile de Antonio purchased the building for $45,000. Artist Alfred Leslie later used the garden level as his studio. After a fire in 2022, Michael Auriemma purchased the building for nearly $3.7 million in 2023. Auriemma then undertook a multimillion-dollar restoration. The building, now called the Rothko House, has been converted into a two-unit condominium, with Jeff Wachtenheim of Corcoran holding the listing.
