Port Moody Backs Indigenous Housing Resolution for UBCM Convention

Port Moody council unanimously supported a resolution on March 10 from the Aboriginal Housing Management Association (AHMA). The resolution requests the province to establish an Indigenous-led housing alliance to address housing instability for Indigenous people living off-reserve.

The resolution is headed to the 2026 Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM) convention. The AHMA proposal urges the province to create an Indigenous-led, cross-sector housing alliance. The alliance would bring together senior representatives from housing, health, justice, social services, Indigenous housing providers, and municipalities. Kelly Moon, from AHMA, told the council that AHMA members already play a major role in providing housing across the province. Moon added that AHMA members are struggling to keep pace with rising costs and shrinking funding streams. AHMA has been dedicated to addressing the housing needs of non-status Indigenous peoples living off-reserve for three decades.
