SteamOS Update Improves Support for Steam Machine, Third-Party Hardware

Valve released a major SteamOS update this week that includes initial support for upcoming Steam Machine hardware. The update also provides improvements for the Steam Deck, third-party gaming handhelds, and other PC hardware.

Valve's Steam Machine desktop has faced challenges due to pricing and availability issues for memory and storage chips. Component shortages have also affected the availability of the Steam Deck. Despite these hardware uncertainties, Valve continues to develop its software. The new SteamOS 3.0 preview release brings a range of changes for the Steam Deck, third-party gaming handhelds, and other PC hardware. Valve says that the update incorporates a new Arch Linux base, an updated graphics driver, version 6.16 of the Linux kernel, and a new version of the KDE Plasma desktop environment for Desktop Mode.
