Celia Thaxter's Poem 'March' Celebrates Spring's Arrival on Isle of Shoals

Celia Thaxter, a 19th-century poet, wrote 'March' while living on the Isle of Shoals. The poem celebrates the coming of spring in a harsh coastal environment.

Celia Thaxter, born in Plymouth, New Hampshire, resided on the Isle of Shoals, a group of ten islands situated approximately 16 kilometres off the New England coast, where she drew inspiration from the natural world. Residing with her father at the Appledore Hotel, Thaxter composed poetry and prose reflecting her observations of the area's rugged environment. According to the Telegraph-Journal, Joan Peace recently shared a segment of Thaxter's work in anticipation of the spring equinox. The selected verses capture the essence of the changing season.
