Father Joseph Mallin, Son of 1916 Rising Leader, Receives Dublin Honour

Father Joseph Mallin, the only surviving child of Irish Citizen Army Commandant Michael Mallin, has received the freedom of the city of Dublin. The honour recognises Mallin's decades of ministry and his father's role in the 1916 Easter Rising.

The now 102-year-old Father Joseph Mallin is the son of Michael Mallin, a leader in the Irish Citizen Army during the Easter Rising. Michael Mallin commanded the Irish Citizen Army at St Stephen's Green in 1916. He met James Connolly through the trade union movement. New York University Professor Joseph Lee has outlined Michael Mallin's role and execution at Kilmainham Gaol on May 8, 1916. According to RTE, a special documentary will show Father Mallin saying that his father denied his central role in the Rising to protect his family. Michael Mallin's final request was that Joseph become a priest and his daughter become a nun.
