HMP New Hall Inmates Complain About Weight Gain From 'Carb Heavy' Food

Inmates at HMP New Hall in West Yorkshire are reportedly gaining weight due to the carbohydrate-rich meals. The Independent Monitoring Board reported that the prison is working to introduce healthier options in response to complaints.

HMP New Hall, a women's prison in West Yorkshire housing approximately 380 inmates, has received complaints regarding its food. According to a report by the Independent Monitoring Board, inmates who transferred to New Hall from other facilities reported gaining weight because of the high-carbohydrate meals. The prison's kitchen is now serving Buddha Bowls, which are plant-based meals with protein and the daily recommended vitamins and minerals. A team of 25 cooks comprised of inmates are creating a new menu in response to complaints. Inmates have requested more variety in available food options.
