Mumbai Woman, 60, Sentenced to Five Years for Marijuana Peddling

A special NDPS court in Mumbai sentenced Ramija Shaikh, 60, to five years in prison for drug peddling. Shaikh was arrested in April 2014 with 9 kg of marijuana.

The Anti Narcotics Cell, Ghatkopar unit, arrested Ramija Shaikh near a public toilet in Ghatkopar West on April 25, 2014, after receiving specific information, according to the prosecution. During the arrest, authorities found 9 kg of marijuana in her possession. Following forensic analysis of the seized contraband, Shaikh was charged with drug peddling. Shaikh's lawyer argued she was falsely implicated and that police planted the drugs. The defence questioned the police vehicle's capacity and raised concerns about a mark near Shaikh's thumb impression on the panchanama. The court rejected these arguments because the defence did not provide sufficient evidence to discredit prosecution witnesses.
