Nigerian Agency Condemns Delta State Festival Assaults, Praises Arrests

The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has denounced the sexual assault of women during a traditional festival in Delta State. NAPTIP commended the police for arresting suspects, including the organizer and community head.

NAPTIP has condemned the sexual assault of women and girls during the 'Alue-Do' festival in Ozoro, Delta State. The agency described the attacks as barbaric, a violation of human rights and dignity, and another form of gender-based violence. Videos on social media showed young women being chased, stripped, and molested during the festival held on March 19. Residents said the festival is a fertility rite meant to invoke blessings for couples seeking children. NAPTIP commended the Nigeria Police Force in Delta State for their swift response and arrests, which included the organiser and the community head. The agency stated it will support actions ensuring justice for victims and preventing future crimes.
