Tamil Nadu Hotels Increase Biryani Prices Amid LPG Cylinder Crisis

Hotels in Tamil Nadu are increasing prices for biryani, a popular dish, due to rising firewood costs. Many hotels are switching to firewood due to a commercial LPG cylinder shortage, impacting profits and business volume, especially in Chennai.

Hotels in Tamil Nadu are grappling with a commercial LPG cylinder crisis, leading many to switch to firewood for cooking. This shift has particularly affected the preparation of biryani, a sought-after delicacy during Eid. According to the Tamil Nadu Hotels Association, approximately 90 per cent of hotels are experiencing a decline in profits, with business dropping by 30 per cent in Chennai alone. M Venkadasubbu, president of the association, noted that hotels are now preparing even side dishes with firewood, which was previously reserved for weddings or large-scale events. While firewood imparts a traditional flavour to biryani, the increased cost of firewood has led to higher prices for consumers. Some hotels have also stopped selling deep-fried items in response to the crisis.
