Venezuela Reshapes Military Leadership Signalling Shift Towards Washington

Venezuela is undergoing a significant military leadership overhaul, signalling a move closer to Washington. Interim President Delcy Rodriguez, in power since January, is implementing reforms, including replacing key commanders with officers viewed favourably by the U.S.

Venezuela is reforming its military and intelligence services, replacing entrenched commanders with officers considered acceptable to Washington. The most notable change involves the replacement of long-standing Defence Minister Vladimir Padrino with Gustavo Gonzalez Lopez, the former intelligence chief. According to Sebastiana Barraez, a journalist covering military affairs, Gonzalez Lopez is now seen as the United States' representative within the armed forces due to his pragmatic approach. A retired Venezuelan general indicated that Washington aims to reinstate the pro-U.S. military doctrine that was abandoned during Hugo Chavez's leadership. For decades, Venezuela had close military ties with the U.S., purchasing weapons and sending officers for training.
