Bangladesh's Declining Groundwater Spurs Agricultural Adaptation in Naogaon District

Villagers in Naogaon's Lakshmipur are adapting farming due to declining groundwater. BRAC's climate program is helping families grow vegetables and create jobs.

Farmers in Lakshmipur, a Santal village in Sapahar, Naogaon, Bangladesh, face challenges in cultivating paddy and seasonal crops due to declining groundwater levels. The Varendra region's geology, weather, and rainfall exacerbate these issues. In 2023, BRAC initiated a climate adaptive agriculture program to address these concerns. This initiative supports families in sustaining their livelihoods by establishing small vegetable gardens. These gardens enhance food security and create employment opportunities for women. Simultaneously, locals have increased mango orchard cultivation, making the area a top producer.
