High Maternal Sugar Intake May Affect Fetal Brain Development: Report

A new report indicates that a mother's diet during pregnancy can impact the brain development of the fetus. High sugar consumption and inflammation may cause the destruction of neurons by overactive microglia, potentially elevating the child's risk of mental health disorders, diabetes, and obesity.

According to a new report, a mother's food consumption during pregnancy shapes the baby's brain. Brain formation involves neurons and microglia, which are immune cells, that detect and fix problems. These microglia eliminate problems in the developing brain. A biochemist notes that high maternal sugar intake can cause elevated inflammation. This may cause microglia to become overactive and destroy neurons. Gestational diabetes has links to a higher risk of psychiatric disorders because of high inflammation.
