Japan Considers Minesweeping Dispatch to Hormuz After Iran Cease-Fire

Japan's Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi suggested the Self-Defense Forces (SDF) could be sent to the Strait of Hormuz for minesweeping after a cease-fire between Iran, the United States, and Israel. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi told President Trump that dispatching SDF vessels faces legal constraints until a formal cease-fire.

Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi indicated on Fuji TV the possibility of Japan dispatching its Self-Defense Forces to the Strait of Hormuz for minesweeping operations, contingent on a cease-fire between Iran, the United States, and Israel. Kyodo News reported that during a summit at the White House in Washington, DC, Prime Minister Takaichi addressed the legal limitations of deploying SDF vessels with President Trump. According to NNN, Takaichi communicated to President Trump that deploying the SDF would be difficult without a formal cease-fire agreement. NNN reported that President Trump acknowledged this position. Multiple cabinet officials stated that Takaichi cited Article 9 of Japan's constitution as creating constraints.
