The 63-year-old coach has experienced chronic heart problems since 2023, and has undergone two procedures to alleviate symptoms. Self's health scare caused concern within college basketball. Self has coached the Kansas Jayhawks for over 800 games, and has over 1,000 games under his belt overall. As of March 21, 2026, he maintained a 648-166 record at Kansas. Self has also coached at Illinois, Tulsa, and Oral Roberts.
