UN Secretary-General Calls for Global Action Against Racism on International Day

UN Secretary-General António Guterres has called for worldwide action to combat racism, which he says remains widespread. Guterres made the statement on the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, March 21.

Speaking on the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, UN Secretary-General António Guterres stated that the legacies of colonialism, slavery, and oppression continue to fuel conflict, as well as economic, social, and political inequality. According to Antara, Guterres warned that new digital tools spread hate speech and harmful stereotypes, which can lead to real-world violence. Guterres urged governments, institutions, businesses, and communities to protect the dignity, justice, equality, and human rights of all people. He emphasized the importance of countries ratifying and implementing the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination.
