Frank Gehry's Unrealized Grand Avenue Concepts Could Revitalize Downtown Los Angeles

Unexecuted concepts by architect Frank Gehry for Los Angeles's Grand Avenue Cultural District may offer a path to urban transformation. These designs could help prepare the city for the upcoming 2028 Olympic Games.

Los Angeles faced a challenging period last spring, marked by cinders and followed by a difficult year that included floods, issues with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and advancements in artificial intelligence. The city also experienced a significant loss in December with the passing of a prominent architect, who had consistently contributed to its civic development and inspired its aesthetic and communal spirit. This architect had envisioned numerous projects for Los Angeles, leaving behind detailed plans. These included blueprints, physical models, sketches, and conceptual designs for a dedicated group of younger architects and future-focused thinkers to develop. The County of Los Angeles has designated the area surrounding the Walt Disney Concert Hall, a notable work by the architect, as the Grand Avenue Cultural District. Questions have arisen regarding the city's readiness for the impending Olympic Games.
