Harvey Barnes Joins England Squad Amid International Window Split

Harvey Barnes, a 28-year-old forward, has been called up to the England squad for the current international window, following an injury to Eberechi Eze. This selection comes after Barnes recently decided to commit his international future to England, declining an approach from Scotland.

Harvey Barnes has been included in the England squad for the ongoing international fixtures this month, as confirmed by manager Tuchel. This opportunity arises after Eberechi Eze sustained an injury, opening a spot in the roster. Barnes, who previously earned his sole England cap in a 2020 friendly match against Wales, had not featured for the national team since. Prior to this call-up, the player had reportedly weighed the possibility of representing Scotland in international competition. However, Scotland's manager, Steve Clarke, confirmed last month on BBC Radio 5 Live that Barnes had chosen to focus on playing for England. Tuchel indicated that the international window would be split into two distinct periods, allowing some established players, with whom he has a prior working relationship as England manager, to rest. Following a match against Uruguay at Wembley on Friday, these regular players will then join the rest of the squad for a game against Japan on Tuesday. Tuchel explained this approach was to broaden the player pool and intensify competition for World Cup roster spots.
