Left Maintains Control in France's Largest Cities After Municipal Elections

France's recent municipal elections saw left-leaning parties secure victories in the nation's three largest cities, marking a significant outcome against far-right and traditional right-wing contenders. This electoral result reinforces the progressive political landscape in major urban centres.

Municipal elections held recently in France solidified the left's political dominance in the country's three most populous cities. This outcome represented notable defeats for both the far-right National Rally (RN) and The Republicans (LR) in key urban areas. Voter turnout exceeded 2020 levels, reaching approximately 57%, as socialist and ecologist candidates successfully defended their positions. In Paris, socialist candidate Emmanuel Grégoire secured a definitive win, succeeding Anne Hidalgo. Grégoire's victory came against right-wing candidate Rachida Dati, who had received an endorsement from President Macron and aimed to transform the capital's political identity. Grégoire's success, with an estimated 51.8% of the vote compared to Dati's 39.6%, effectively countered expectations of a potential shift towards the right.
