Ovechkin Achieves 1,000 Total Goals, Joins Gretzky in NHL Record Books

Washington Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin reached 1,000 career goals across his entire NHL tenure on Sunday against the Colorado Avalanche. This achievement makes him only the second player in league history to hit this combined scoring mark.

Alex Ovechkin, a prominent figure for the Washington Capitals, secured his 1,000th goal across his professional career on Sunday during a game against the Colorado Avalanche. This significant scoring event occurred with 5:43 remaining in the third period, as Ovechkin converted a power-play opportunity. The goal, his 26th of the current season, tied the game at 2-2, ultimately earning the Capitals a crucial point despite a 3-2 overtime loss. Ovechkin expressed mixed feelings, stating, "It sucks that we lost but right now, every point, we take it," while acknowledging the personal achievement: "It's always nice to reach (a milestone) and it was an important goal as well." He now stands alongside Wayne Gretzky as the only athletes to reach this combined goal total in the National Hockey League, with Gretzky having amassed 1,016 goals. Ovechkin also holds the distinction of being the sole player to score 900 regular-season goals, with a total of 923, making him the all-time leading scorer in that category.
