Salesforce CEO states AI tools replace need for new engineering hires

Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff announced the company did not hire new engineers in fiscal year 2026, instead utilizing AI-powered coding tools for necessary capacity. This shift reflects a broader trend of artificial intelligence impacting staffing decisions across various corporate functions.

The integration of artificial intelligence into business operations is actively reshaping employment strategies within corporations. Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff recently discussed these changes in an interview with TBPN. He indicated that Salesforce opted against recruiting additional engineers for fiscal year 2026. This decision stemmed from the company's reliance on AI-driven coding agents, which provided the required capacity for the year, according to Benioff. He suggested that these AI systems are now proficient enough to produce the desired results, thereby negating the necessity for more human personnel in engineering roles. This development aligns with observations from Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, who previously noted that fewer software engineers would be needed as AI models become more adept at automating engineering tasks. Beyond engineering, Salesforce has also scaled back hiring for customer service positions, deploying AI agents to manage support functions. Concurrently, Salesforce has expanded its sales force, increasing hires by approximately 20 per cent.
