UK, European Tourists Cancel New Zealand Trips Amidst Middle East Travel Disruptions

Ongoing instability in the Middle East has led to substantial disruptions for air travellers, particularly affecting those transiting through major hubs in Dubai, Doha, and Abu Dhabi. This turmoil has caused numerous flight delays and cancellations, with airlines rerouting operations due to safety considerations. The situation has created considerable challenges for UK and European tourists, many of whom rely on these connections for long-haul journeys to the Pacific, including New Zealand. A recent "rapid snapshot survey" by the Tourism Export Council revealed that 77 per cent of 70 tourism operators reported cancellations from travellers originating in the United Kingdom and Europe for March and April 2026. These disruptions are primarily attributed to altered flight paths and reduced flight availability through key transit points. Additionally, severe weather has recently contributed to grounding international flights for carriers such as Gulf Air, Qatar Airways, and Emirates, further exacerbating travel issues across routes connecting the Middle East with Asia, Europe, and Africa.
